Writing Section: Reflection on "Five Myths About Terrorists"
  • Prompt: Jessica Stern, in her article “Five Myths About Terrorists,” challenges common myths about terrorism and those who commit acts of terror. Identify each myth and explain how stern works to dispel these misconceptions.
  • Use a T chart for this activity (myths on one side, how the author dispels the myths on the other side.
  • Give specific evidence the author uses to dispel myths. Do not write "She says it's wrong" and move on.

Writing Section: Quick Write - You Pick
  • Choose ONE of the statements below that you agree with most. Explain why you agree with the statement and why you DON'T agree with the other statement.

  • The U.S. is morally obligated to provide aid to poor nations.


  • The U.S. should take care of its people and not worry about providing aid to poor nations.


Reading Section: Hunger article
  • Review Key Terms and Vocabulary for the new article.

  • Students keep Cornell Notes.

  • students read and mark the text (first reading)
  • students re-read, in groups of 2 or 3, and write summary sentences for each paragraph (second reading)

Speaking Section: "The Cask of Amontillado" Dialectical Journal Presentations
  • Show/explain your cover art.
  • Read your quotation.
  • Explain:
    • What does the quotation mean?
    • Why is it important?
    • What is your personal response to the quotation?

Grammar Section: Subject Verb Object Challenge
  1. Write 5 sentences.
  2. Each sentence needs to have a subject, a verb, and an object.
  3. Mr. Devine will form groups of 3 to 4 (listen for your number).
  4. In your group, ask a question then read your sentence. For example: "What is the verb in this sentence?"
  5. Challenge someone in the group to answer your question correctly.


Reading Section: "The Most Dangerous Game" page 67
  • Begin reading.
  • Students keep summary sentences as we read.

Reading Section: Chart the Text - Hunger article
  • Students will chart the text using this abbreviated bank of text charting verbs:
    • introduce
    • summarize
    • offers evidence
    • makes a claim
    • addresses the bias
    • supports
    • defends
  • Practice as a group for the first two paragraphs.
  • Work in groups for the next three paragraphs.
  • Finish the rest at home.
